Tall Ship Sailing

Step back in time and explore New Zealand like Captain Cook onboard a historic Tall Ship. If you love adventure and dream of views of unspoiled islands, whether you have a week, a day or even an afternoon, sailing the South Pacific promises a unique journey for everyone.

The R.Tucker Thompson is a traditional tall ship built by Northlanders, a working replica of a Halibut Schooner and one of the most established working ships in the Bay of Islands. With the opportunity to relax and soak up the sun with a good read or experience a lesson in sailing from the crew, a day on the deck is a holiday highlight. With adult prices at NZ $145 and children at $72.50, a day trip is great value for money with cream tea and a BBQ lunch thrown in plus transfers from Paihia or Russell Wharf. There’s plenty of time for a lunchtime swim and island stopover too with the chance to ride the bowsprit, climb the rigging or swing from the rope into the Pacific below!

If short on time, take an afternoon sail from Russell Wharf at 4pm, through the inner bay to the town of Opua with trips on Fridays, Sundays and Wednesdays if in a small group. An antipasto platter included, tickets cost $69 for adults and $34.50 for children, again with transfers. Opua is known as the gateway to the Bay of Islands, where the Kawakawa River and Waikeri River meet.

If a longer voyage is what you’re after, the tall ship Soren Larsen is the perfect extension to a visit in New Zealand, with the chance to explore the beautiful islands of Polynesia and Melanesia, for NZ trips lasting 3-5 days, up to Pacific voyages over a few months! During your adventure onboard, you will be signed as a member of the ship’s crew, however the choice is yours for how involved you want to be. With 22-guest voyage crew on board, time and space is never in short supply. The Soren Larsen offers a range of trips from an ocean or coastal passage voyage to an island cruise or best of both. For the majestic sight of a sunrise alone, a longer sail is well worth the extra miles from Auckland. Prices from New Zealand start at AUD $3990 for 10 nights to $7590 for 32 sailing as far as Australia, the Cook Islands and Fiji.
