Go Karting in New Zealand is becoming increasingly popular. While this has something to do with the Kiwi love for speed and all things adrenaline-related, it’s also because it’s an accessible sport that appeals to people from all walks of life. Additionally, it’s a sport that the whole family can enjoy together and drivers’ ages can range from the very young to the very old.
While the tiny appearance of contemporary Go Karts might not leave the overall impression of speed, appearances can be deceiving and the reality of driving one feels much different. There are many different types of Go Karts around, the biggest being the SuperKart, which has a 250cc engine. When combined with a Go Kart’s tight turning circle and the fact that drivers are so close to the ground, this definitely raises the excitement levels. To make sure it stays safe, however, reputable tracks always ask drivers to wear purpose-built suits, helmets, gloves and shoes.
According to the industry body Kart Sports, there are 21 affiliated Go Kart clubs throughout New Zealand, each with their own permanent sprint track, motor racing circuit or speedway. Race meetings are held regularly and there are often beginner days where novice drivers can try it out and see if they enjoy the sport and want to take it further. Driving lessons and mechanical classes are also available at many clubs so that participants can improve their Go Karting skills and build their course racing confidence.
