Due to the remoteness of Milford Sound, the best way to get there is by car. There are coach and bus tours that run from Queenstown, but you are restricted to their seasonal schedules and selected stops.
With the self-driving option, it would take you just under 4 hours to drive the 287km. The roads are sealed and well-maintained, plus it gives you the option to stop in incredible spots like Garston and Lake Te Anau.
The closest area to drive to near Doubtful Sound is the small town of Manapouri, which would take you 2 hours to drive the 172km route. From Manapouri, you can take a boat across the lake, then a coach ride over the Wilmot Pass to reach the jaw-dropping Doubtful Sound.
Unfortunately, the ferry to Stewart Island is a passenger ferry only. It's recommended to take your car rental to the charming town of Bluff and park in the visitor terminal before boarding the ferry.
