What to know before you rent a minibus in New Zealand

Whether it's your first minibus hire or your first time driving in New Zealand, minor preparation can make your self-driving holiday a breeze. Here are a few tips for driving a minivan vehicle in New Zealand

  • You will not need a small passenger service licence to hire our 8 and 10-seater minibuses. These special licences are for commercial van service in which the driver is paid.

  • Do not exceed the maximum number of passengers for the minibus hire selected.

  • Remember that vans are taller than standard vehicle hires and may be affected by high wind areas. Drive slower to ensure safety on the road.

  • It is wise to take note of the van dimensions, so you know which parking spots you can get into and the height restrictions you may encounter.

  • Before setting off, adjust your van mirrors to reduce blind spots. Remember that vans are longer than standard vehicles, so be mindful when changing lanes or turning.

  • Be sure to check which side of the car the fuel cap are on in your vehicle.

  • Prepare yourself for driving on the left-hand side of the road in a minivan. For more information, see our complete guide to left-hand side driving in New Zealand.

  • Vans will need more fuel to run than a standard vehicle, so plan your fuel stops for long-distance remote road trips.

  • If you're visiting in winter, special preparation is required. In particular, you'll need to be ready to use snow chains which can be hired and installed by our GO Rentals team. See our guide to winter driving for more information.
