A one-way rental fee may apply of between $100 - $1,000 depending on the availability of our branches. The exact amount will show on your booking summary before checkout.
Our minimum one-way car hire period may vary between 1 and 7 days depending on the driving distance between your pick-up and drop-off locations.
Whilst our one-way rentals are dependent on season peak times and vehicle availability in branches, we can create more one-way availability if we need to move vehicles to another location. If you are not satisfied with our website availability, please call us and we will do our best to accommodate your epic one-way road trip.
You can take any GO Rentals vehicle on the Cook Strait Ferry between the North and South Island, which is perfect for a stress-free one-way road trip. We have 10 car rental branches spread evenly throughout New Zealand, in the major destinations. You’re never far from a GO Rentals car.

Complete the ultimate New Zealand road trip by picking up a GO Rentals car from our Auckland branch and simply drop it off in Queenstown. All of our GO Rentals cars are permitted to go on the Cook Strait Ferry between the North and South Islands so you can take a stress-free one-way car rental trip.
With car rental locations in Auckland Airport or the city and Wellington Airport, you can get going on an epic North Island one-way car rental trip. It can take around eight hours to drive the 400 kilometres from Auckland to Wellington along State Highway Four. Pass through Hamilton for a Lord of the Rings Hobbit adventure, marvel at the breathtaking sight of Mount Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park, and check out the famous ski slopes.
Pick up a GO Rentals car from our Christchurch Airport branch and simply return to our Queenstown Airport branch after you have explored to your heart's content. It will take you 6 hours to complete the 480km drive from Christchurch to Queenstown down State Highway 8. Take a detour to the mesmerising Lake Tekapo or stop and hike in the jaw-dropping Mount Cook National Park.
This short 4-hour journey is not one to be missed with a one-way car rental from our GO Rentals Dunedin branch to our Queenstown location. We recommend taking a 1-hour detour to Bluff, the oldest European settlement in New Zealand, and trying the world-famous Bluff Oysters.
Our Nelson and Christchurch branches offer one-way car rentals so you can complete this stunning 5-hour journey with ease. Take a detour for a kayak in Abel Tasman National Park, swim with dolphins in Kaikōura, or soak in the Hanmer hot springs before dropping your rental car off in Christchurch.
One-way car rentals between our Christchurch and Dunedin locations are an amazing way to see the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. This 5-hour journey will take you through Rakaia Gorge, New Zealand's best salmon fishing spot, and Oamaru, home of the unique Oamaru blue penguin colony.
The price of our rental vehicles does not increase for one-way hires. However, depending on the location availability, a relocation fee of between $100 - $1,000 may apply and will be shown within your booking summary before checkout.
All of our car rentals can go on the Cook Strait ferry from the North to the South Island. Book your one-way car rental in advance and secure a place on the ferry from Wellington to Picton and you can have a stress-free road trip across the whole of New Zealand.
You can add an additional driver to your booking at any time and they can return your one-way rental. The additional driver will need to meet the minimum licence requirements and be able to present this licence at any of our branches before being added to the rental agreement.
