Wellington to Palmerston Tips from our Local Staff!

Kia Ora from our award-winning employees! We are passionate about New Zealand and have put together our insider local tips to GO the extra mile for our customers!

  • Jess from the Wellington Branch

One of my favourite things to do during the winter is to visit the Wellington Zoo and meet our latest additions to the zoo, the snow leopards – they’ve been with us for a year now. A 10-minute drive from there are some beautiful cafes at Lyall Bay with beautiful views and beautiful food. And then, for a lovely winter’s night, you can take a walk around Oriental Parade and see the fountain light up and see the beautiful lights of the waterfront in Wellington.

  • Hiro from the Wellington Branch

Mt Makara / Makara peak and Mt Kaukau. These are large hills near Wellington City centre. We can see the whole of Wellington City from the top of the hills. Some tourists are only looking for short hikes in nature near Wellington, so I would recommend this spot because the hills are only a 15- to 20-minute drive from the CBD and will only take a 90-minute return walk. These spots are good to know how close Wellington is to our beautiful nature.

  • Lauren from HQ Trade Team

My favourite place to travel in Aotearoa New Zealand is Whanganui a Tara Wellington. Some of the best food and restaurants and cafes, best coffee in New Zealand and a really beautiful waterfront.

  • Alex from the Wellington Branch

Pinnacles Track Wairarapa - Adopt the pace of nature while exploring the beauty of the landscape and the excellent view of Palliser Bay and Lake Onoke. The walk can take 2-4 hours depending on the track you choose.

Wellington to Palmerston road trip tips?

The Wellington to Palmerston road trip takes you through a breathtaking, awe-inspiring mountain range and serene forest signature to New Zealand's landscape. With such an incredible path ahead of you, it’s natural to feel a little intimidated. Here are some tips to make your time on the road feel more comfortable and secure:

  • Road rules:
New Zealand's road rules may be slightly different to the ones that you are used to. Check out our guide to New Zealand driving rules for tourists for all the information you need for a safer and more comfortable journey.
  • Plan your route:
Our itinerary takes you through a longer, more rural route than the faster route on SH 1. This means you may have limited mobile coverage on some parts of the road. Be sure to check for gas stations or road blocks and closures before you set off. You can also use the GO Rentals trip planner tool to help you choose the best route for your journey.
  • Check for parking:
In areas like the Tararua Mountain Range or the Pukaha National Wildlife Centre, parking may be limited or located a short walk away. Ensure you’ve checked where to park ahead of time. If necessary, you should also check for shuttle buses if you need to leave your vehicle at your lodgings.
  • Know the weather:
Weather conditions in this part of New Zealand can become hazardous or extreme, which could affect your itinerary and require you to find new lodging, or to wait a day or more before departing. Check the New Zealand Transport Agency’s official highway conditions tool to see if weather conditions have affected your road ahead before you begin driving.

The photo was taken at Island Bay Beach to recreate/revamp a picture that was taken when we were little in the same spot. We're originally from Wellington but have lived overseas now since '96. From start to finish booking the car with GO Rentals has been super easy! Renting a car can be scary with hidden fees etc. But everything was clear, upfront, and seamless. I spent no more than 5 mins at pick up/return. I've been a returning customer for over 15 years because of this service! Thank you again.
