A non-stop drive from Queenstown to Wanaka takes roughly 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete via the Crown Range Road, through Cardrona.

The route offers some seriously breathtaking alpine scenery on your way to Wanaka. With epic views of the surrounding mountains, Arrowtown and The Remarkables, you'll see why this is one of the most beautiful lookouts in the area. A must-visit for any mountain lover!

However, this winding road features sharp hairpin turns, steep conditions and heavier traffic in the peak summer season. During winter, it gets icy, and the route may close when road conditions become too dangerous. We recommend fitting snow chains onto your vehicle for safety if you are travelling in the colder months.

Queenstown to Arrow Junction Lookout, via State Highway 6A and State Highway 6 (21 km - 23 minutes)

Head out of Queenstown and towards Arrowtown on State Highway 6A and State Highway 6. This is the longest single highway in the country and runs the length of the South Island!

Arrowtown

Explore Arrowtown (Ka-Muriwai), a historic gold mining town rich in rustic charm and natural beauty. Wander through the town centre and discover beautiful heritage buildings that now house cosy cafes and local boutiques.

Drop by the award-winning Lake District Museum for a glimpse into the gold rush. Learn all about life in the Whakatipu District during the mid-1800s and try your luck with a fun gold panning experience!

Arrow Junction Lookout

Continue along State Highway 6 and swing by Arrow Junction Lookout, a great pit stop for a photo opportunity. Snap a pic and drink in the sprawling valleys, picturesque villages and snow-capped mountains from above.

Visit during the summer months to spot colourful wildflowers blooming across lush green fields.

Arrow Junction Lookout to Crown Range Viewpoint, via Crown Range Road (8 km - 9 minutes)

Turn onto the Crown Range Road after driving past Lake Hayes. Look out for the clearly marked turnoff sign and prepare for some incredible views along your journey!


Remember to check for any road closures prior to your departure. Prepare snow chains on your vehicle if necessary.

Crown Range Road Scenic Lookout

Pass Lake Hayes and head left at the Crown Range Road turnoff to begin your mountain ascent. Crown Range Road is the highest main road in New Zealand and reaches a whopping altitude of 1121 metres above sea level.

Reach the allocated viewpoints to hop out and admire the sweeping views of Arrowtown, The Remarkables and the valley below. Look out for a dedicated pullover bay to enjoy the scenery from, as the steep, switchback road makes it dangerous to stop along the way.

Crown Range Summit

Arguably one of the most stunning views in New Zealand, the Crown Range Summit is a must-see for any visitor. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables while enjoying the fresh alpine air.

This is a popular destination for hikers and campers, with a free camping ground and walking tracks going further up the mountain.

Crown Range Viewpoint to Cardrona, via Crown Range Road (18 km - 19 minutes)

Follow Crown Range Road down to Cardrona, a township well-loved for its cross-country ski trails and gold-rush-era charm. On your way, stop by the iconic Cardrona Bra Fence (affectionately nicknamed 'Bradrona') for a quirky tourist experience that brings awareness to breast cancer.

Cardrona Hotel

Pop into the historic Cardrona Hotel, rumoured to be one of New Zealand's most photographed buildings. This iconic establishment has operated since 1863 and maintains plenty of its original rustic charm.

For a hearty meal, you can't go past the Cardrona Hotel's lunch and dinner offerings. Explore their wide selection of locally brewed craft beer and enjoy a refreshing pint in the beer garden before setting off on your journey.

Cardrona Distillery

Once you've fuelled up with a meal at Cardrona Hotel, head down the road to Cardrona Distillery. Join a classic distillery tour to learn how pure alpine water is used to make top-quality fine spirits and liqueurs. Taste testing included, so assign a designated driver to keep you safe on the road! Check out their cellar door on your way out, where you can pick up a bottle or two for a tasty souvenir.

Cardrona to Wanaka, via Cardrona Valley Road (23 km - 18 minutes)

Wind down your journey and drive from Cardrona to Wanaka, which will take you less than 20 minutes. Make sure you save yourself plenty of time to take in the sights along the way to your final destination.

Wanaka Lavender Farm

Just before arriving in Wanaka, you will pass by the vibrant Wanaka Lavender Farm. Experience a working lavender farm abundant with gorgeous flower fields, farm animals, and display gardens to enjoy.

Relax in the tearoom after a frolic in the lavender fields or sample some of the local honey and lavender products from the gift shop.

Lake Wanaka

Surrounded by the Southern Alps in the Otago region, Lake Wanaka is a magnificent alpine lake that draws visitors from all over the world.
