How to Rent a Car with GO Rentals

We offer one-way car rentals at all of our 9 locations on both the South and North Islands. If you’re planning on a car rental Invercargill to Nelson, just select your pick-up date and drop-off location for a convenient and great value rental car experience. Please note:

  • A one-way rental fee of between $100 and $1000 may apply, depending on the availability of our branches. The exact amount will show on your booking summary before checkout.
  • Our minimum one-way car hire period may vary between 1 and 7 days, depending on the driving distance between your pick-up and drop-off locations. This is to ensure you have enough time to enjoy your trip without stressing about your return date.

Whilst our one-way rentals are dependent on season peak times and vehicle availability in branches, we can create more one-way availability if we need to move vehicles to another location. If you are not satisfied with our website availability, please call us, and we will do our best to accommodate your epic one-way road trip.

One-Way Car Rental Customer Facts

  • Minimum Age: You must be 21 years old to cruise in a standard GO Rentals hire car and 25 to experience the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y hire cars. Good news: we do not apply a young driver surcharge!
  • Maximum Age: There is no age limit to GO with us! As long as you have a valid licence, we welcome you with open arms.
  • New Zealand Licence Rule: Temporary, restricted and full driver's licences are permitted to rent some vehicles with GO. Photo identification is required if hiring a vehicle with a New Zealand temporary licence. Electric vehicles cannot be hired on a restricted licence.
  • Foreign Licence Rule: Valid, full driver's licences are accepted from overseas travellers but must be translated to English and NZTA approved. Foreign learner's and provisional licences are not valid for renting with GO.
  • Credit Card Requirement: A credit card is required for bookings with the Basic or Assured insurance options that require a bond deposit. A debit card is acceptable for the upgraded Peace of Mind or some Assured insurance options without a bond requirement.
  • Additional Drivers: Simply pop in to any of our branches and show us your driver's licence to add you onto a booking.
  • Family needs: You can hire baby capsules, child seats and booster seats for your little ones! Add them onto your booking quote and we will fit them ready for you to GO.
  • Documents for collection: You will need your valid driver licence and your debit or credit card in your name. Note that a credit card is required for bookings with the Basic or Assured insurance option that requires a bond deposit.

Driving in Invercargill and Nelson

Traffic and Parking in Invercargill and Nelson

Invercargill: Parking in Invercargill is widely available, and relatively easy to find for free or low-cost spots in the city centre. It is also one of the easiest cities for drivers in New Zealand, so you will likely have no issues parking.

Nelson: Nelson is a great place to drive, and traffic is typically light. However, during major local events, traffic will be more congested and roads may be closed. Nelson offers many long-term and short-term parking spaces, and some areas have free parking available.

Toll Roads and Road Conditions

There are only three toll roads in New Zealand, all located on the North Island. You don’t have to worry about them on your trip to Nelson.

Thanks to GO Rentals’ Total Road Care Package, you don’t need to stress about paying for toll roads even when you are travelling on the North Island. This mandatory $3/day package covers you for all toll road fees you incur, including associated admin costs.

The roads between Invercargill and Nelson are well-maintained and offer clear signage. However, some roads on the South Island may be winding or narrow. 50km/h speed limits apply in urban and populated areas, and 100km/h limits apply on the open road.
