At the top of this page, we promised you would be able to try local honey on this drive. Garston is home to the famous Garston Hunny Shop, and it's totally worth a stop. With incredible honey and natural bee products, the Garston stop offers a view of New Zealand's countryside charm.

Try your hand at fishing on the serene Mataura River. It's popular among locals and travellers, and a cool place to try for the first time. With a small art gallery, cosy cafes and shops, the Athol township is worth a look around.

Lumsden is also a popular fishing area, in particular for trout fishing. With nearby rivers and lakes to explore, it's still worth a trip even if you don't fish. The town of Lumsden itself is charming, with heritage buildings, a cool history and cute cafes; it's a great stop on the Queenstown to Invercargill route.

Stretch your legs one final time with a 5-kilometre hiking trail to explore heritage trails, historic buildings and the town's history. Finish off with a pub dinner to enjoy the local cuisine. We'd recommend trying the Southland's seafood, like crayfish!

New Zealand is best explored in a modern, reliable car. But don't take our word for it. Cruise through the happy customers revv'd up about their experience:

Our few of our dancers flew down to Queenstown, rented a Go Rental car, and drove to Arrowtown, Cromwell, up Coronet Peak and through the Crown Ranges -pulling over at the side of the road randomly, and at lookouts (with other cars passing and beeping!) to capture our dancers amongst the magnificence of Queenstown and it's beautiful scenery. This is one of our dancers, Olivia, in front of the gorgeous mountainous backdrop. Thanks Go Rentals for making the rental so easy, and for making this experience possible!

Love in its purest form

I am from Auckland and I met up in Queenstown with a mate from Sydney for a boys climbing trip. We hired an unmissable blue Toyota Corolla which faithfully took us to multiple epic climbing spots. These included Kingston, Wye Creek, The Remarkables (Single Cone) and Wanaka. We even stopped off at the legendary Cadrona pub after sending “The Crack” on the Tombstone and the 3 pitch “Turn on, tune in and drop out”. The route in the picture is the iconic roof climb on Proud Monkey roof, Wye Creek. We climbed 18 vertical rock pitches and walked 38000 steps in 4 days. The Blue wonder aka Toyota Corolla did the rest.

A walk around the beautiful lake, finding a small rock formation- lucky shot!

Queenstown has few free parking options, and the majority of central Queenstown is metered, and spaces can fill up during peak hours. Parking in Invercargill, however, is widely available, and it's easy to find free or low-cost spots in the city centre. As one of the easiest cities to drive around in New Zealand, you will likely have no issue parking.
Awesome news! There are no toll roads between Queenstown and Invercargill. Cruise any road you like without needing to stress about toll payments or detours. Although the route is well-maintained, you should expect some windy areas closer to Invercargill. The location at the southernmost point is open to the elements, and the wind can blow strongly on some days.
