Please note:

  • A one-way rental fee between $100 and $1,000 may apply, depending on branch availability. The exact fee will be shown in your booking summary before checkout.
  • Our minimum hire period for one-way rentals varies between 1 and 7 days, depending on the distance between pick-up and drop-off points. This ensures you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy the journey without the stress of rushing back.

While one-way rentals are subject to peak season demand and vehicle availability, we can sometimes create more availability if we need to relocate vehicles between branches. One-Way Car Rental Customer Facts

  • Minimum Age: You must be 21 years old to cruise in a standard GO Rentals hire car and 25 to experience the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y hire cars. Good news: we do not apply a young driver surcharge!
  • Maximum Age: There is no age limit to GO with us! As long as you have a valid licence, we welcome you with open arms.
  • New Zealand Licence Rule: Temporary, restricted and full driver's licences are permitted to rent some vehicles with GO. Photo identification is required if hiring a vehicle with a New Zealand temporary licence. Electric vehicles cannot be hired on a restricted licence.
  • Foreign Licence Rule: Valid, full driver's licences are accepted from overseas travellers but must be translated to English and NZTA approved. Foreign learner's and provisional licences are not valid for renting with GO.
  • Credit Card Requirement: A credit card is required for bookings with the Basic or Assured insurance options that require a bond deposit. A debit card is acceptable for the upgraded Peace of Mind or some Assured insurance options without a bond requirement.
  • Additional Drivers: Simply pop in to any of our branches and show us your driver's licence to add you onto a booking.
  • Family needs: You can hire baby capsules, child seats and booster seats for your little ones! Add them onto your booking quote and we will fit them ready for you to GO.
  • Documents for collection: You will need your valid driver licence and your debit or credit card in your name. Note that a credit card is required for bookings with the Basic or Assured insurance option that requires a bond deposit.

Driving in Wellington and Invercargill

Traffic and Parking in Wellington and Invercargill

Wellington: Traffic in Wellington can get heavy, especially during peak hour congestion. Street parking and paid facilities are available and typically cost $4 to $5 per hour on weekdays, and $3 on weekends. Free parking is not common, but can be found in outer districts or residential areas. For more information, visit Wellington City Council.

Invercargill: Invercargill is one of the easiest cities to drive in across New Zealand due to low congestion and widely available parking. You can find free and low-cost parking in the city centre.

Toll Roads and Road Conditions

There are only three toll roads in New Zealand, all located on the North Island, closer to Auckland than Wellington. You won’t have to worry about any toll roads on your trip to Invercargill.

Thanks to GO Rentals’ Total Road Care Package, you don’t need to stress about paying for toll roads even when you are travelling on the North Island. This mandatory $3/day package covers you for all toll road fees you incur, including associated admin costs.

The roads between Wellington and Invercargill are maintained very well and offer clear signage. However, some roads on the South Island may be winding or narrow. 50km/h speed limits apply in urban and populated areas, and 100km/h limits apply on the open road.
